Intro

After news this week that Tabacalera William Ventura has suffered damage due to a large fire, I thought it was a good time to review this cigar and celebrate ADV's launch into the NZ market.

If you didn't see the news, A significant fire broke out early Monday morning in the Zona Franca La Palma complex in Tamboril, Dominican Republic, destroying the Tabacalera William Ventura and Intercigar S.A. factories.

According to local reports, by 4 a.m. it had consumed the majority of the building and was still burning into the early afternoon with firefighters actively working on getting it under control and keeping it from spreading further.

The fire did not damage a smaller factory and facility owned by the Venturas, known as El Maestro, which is used to produce smaller projects. The company said that all production would immediately move to that facility while the main factory is unavailable.

Overview

The name La Llorona comes from from Latin folklore, meaning "The Weeping Woman" or "The Wailer" and she is a Hispanic-American mythical, vengeful ghost, who is said to roam waterfront areas mourning her children whom she drowned.

The cigar features an Ecuadorian wrapper over a Dominican binder and Nicaraguan and Dominican fillers.

About the wrapper.

Habano cigar wrapper is a leaf grown from a Cuban seed, hence the word “Habano” or “Havano,” referring to Cuba's capitol. Habano tobacco wrapper is darker in colour, has a much spicier flavour, a richer aroma, and has been grown in Nicaragua's Jalapa Valley and Estelí since the 1990's.

More important than the pronunciation are the reasons we like Habano cigar wrappers. Mainly we like the Habano wrapper’s flavour. It’s spicy, rich and the colour is generally dark. Chocolate is commonly tasted in Habano wrappers. And the Habano cigar wrapper is going on many of your favourite cigars.

While Nicaragua Habano is less common than Ecuador Habano, the varietal can be found on a handful of stronger cigars.

let's get into the review.

First thoughts

Loving the branding, I know it doesn't physically effect the cigar, but it is still nice to have a cigar with a good looking band.

Construction

The construction is great, No flaws to be seen, well rolled and a good cap.

Burn & Draw Again, perfect burn and draw, I cannot fault either here.

Flavour & Complexity Leather, coffee and pepper are the dominants, there is also a sweetness and some cocoa, likely from the wrapper. Complexity is good, blend is nice.

Strength 65% - Medium

Enjoyment / Journey Good progression throughout the stick, I perhaps would have liked a little more 'build' as it does seem to be fairly consistent, but hey, consistently good isn't a bad thing right?

Overall It feels like I had very little to say about this stick.. but thats not because it was bad, quite the opposite, this is an outstanding cigar and i'm super happy to see these landing in NZ. I hope the fire doesn't create too many issues for supply moving forward.. however i'm sure it will.. so maybe get in quick! haha.

I rate this cigar 94 points!
