Micallef hits NZ

By now you might have heard the news that Grant and the team at Canteros.nz have become the first International Cigar Partner of Micallef Cigars!

This is huge news for Canteros and NZ cigar fans alike. The Micallef Black Toro was named Cigar of the Year by The Cigar Authority in 2023 and the Black, Blue and Red have been a huge hit in the USA and considered by many as some of the best cigars for the past 2 years - In fact I rated the Black a 92 points not too long ago

The cigars are made by the Gomez Sanchez family in Nicaragua at Micallef's own factory; the Gomez Sanchez family have been making cigars for three generations.

Joel Gomez Sanchez left Cuba in 1994, and his brother Edel left in 1998. The brothers currently live in Florida in travel to Nicaragua regularly to oversee production. Their mother, Migdalia Sanchez, was a highly trained tobacconist and one of Fidel Castro’s senior rollers before she defected Cuba to Nicaragua.

Her father, Joel’s and Edel’s grandfather, Pedro F. Gomez, learned his trade young and traveled the world perfecting it and later passing that wealth of knowledge down to his daughter and grandsons.

The Micallef factory was "tuned" from day-one to be able to comfortably produce 1.6m cigars annually and they are one of the only new entrants who purchase entire crops of tobacco; keeping their production costs low and quality high - they are now also planting their own fields in Nicaragua for further vertically integrated production.

For those in the Hemmingway club, you will have also received an epic little Micallef coin in the March shipment which matches nicely with the Hemmingway challenge coin.

For now, only the 'colour' range are available on the Canteros site, but I'm sure we will see many more options soon, there are a few options available in the Micallef lineup.

Congrats to Grant and the team, and thank you from the BOTL and SOTL for continuing to improve our local options!
